The short answer: hiring a Shopify developer costs USD 15 to 95 an hour on Upwork, USD 25 to 49 an hour at the average e-commerce agency listed on Clutch, and USD 100 to 199 an hour at many US and UK Shopify agencies. By project, a small fix costs from about USD 50, a store on a purchased theme about USD 900 to 3,500, a custom theme USD 3,500 to 12,000, and enterprise or Shopify Plus work starts around USD 15,000.
Every market figure below comes from a page we opened and read on the date shown, and we name the source beside it. Where we quote our own prices, they are the same fixed ranges on our pricing page. Almost nobody in this market publishes fixed prices, which is exactly why this question is so hard to answer. We think buyers deserve a straight number.

Shopify developer hourly rates in 2026
Hourly rates depend on two things more than anything else: where the developer is, and how you hire them. These are the published figures we checked on 30 September 2026.
| Source | What it measures | Hourly rate (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Upwork | Median rates on historical Shopify developer contracts, worldwide | 15 to 29 median; beginner 15, intermediate 33, expert 95 |
| Lemon.io | Vetted developers with 2+ years' experience, report updated September 2026 | 15 to 95 globally; mid-level 23 to 33, senior 27 to 45 |
| Lemon.io, United States | US-based Shopify developers | Mid-level 42 to 51, senior 57 to 74 |
| Lemon.io, Latin America | Latin American Shopify developers | 25 to 37 on average |
| Clutch | E-commerce development companies listed on Clutch (average) | 25 to 49 |
| Clutch, first page of Shopify agencies | Hourly bands agencies list on their profiles | Under 25 (several Indian firms) to 150 to 199 (several US agencies) |
Two things are worth knowing about these numbers. First, marketplace rates are for development time only. They rarely include design, testing, project management or anyone checking the work. Second, the highest bands are not only about skill. A US agency at USD 150 an hour is paying US salaries, US insurance and a team around the developer, which is what you are buying.
Shopify developer cost by hiring model
Freelance marketplaces (Upwork, Fiverr and similar)
The lowest entry price, and genuinely good value for a well-defined task you can check yourself: fixing a section, installing and configuring an app, adjusting a template. Upwork's own figures put the median Shopify contract at USD 15 to 29 an hour, with experienced experts around USD 95. The risk grows with the size of the job. On a full build or migration, you become the project manager, the designer's brief-writer and the tester.
Shopify Partner Directory
Shopify's Partner Directory lists agencies and freelancers that Shopify has approved as partners, each with a price line per service. On 25 September 2026 we read the service prices on 411 partner profiles across the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan and the Philippines. Only 139 of the 411 published a dollar figure for any core service; the rest say "Contact for pricing". Among those that did, the median starting prices were:
| Service | All regions | US, UK and Canada | Australia and NZ | India and other |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Troubleshooting | 50 | 50 | 60 | 48 |
| Theme customisation | 100 | 125 | 100 | 100 |
| Store build or redesign | 945 | 1,500 | 998 | 500 |
| Store migration | 1,000 | 1,975 | 3,000 | 898 |
| Custom apps and integrations | 2,000 | 2,250 | too few priced | 1,750 |
| Ongoing website management (monthly) | 500 | 532 | too few priced | 95 |
Median starting prices in USD, from our review of public Shopify Partner Directory profiles on 25 September 2026. A starting price is a floor, not a typical invoice: the median top of a store build range across all regions was USD 8,000.
Agencies
Agencies cost more per hour and less per mistake. You get a designer, developers, someone testing on real devices and a project manager, and one party is accountable for the result. For a full store build, a migration, an integration or anything touching checkout, that usually makes an agency cheaper in total, even at a higher rate. Agency pricing ranges from under USD 25 an hour offshore to USD 100 to 199 an hour for many US and UK Shopify agencies on Clutch.
Hiring in-house
A full-time Shopify developer makes sense once you have a steady flow of work every week. Lemon.io's September 2026 report puts US Shopify developers at about USD 84,000 to 102,000 a year at mid-level and USD 114,000 to 148,000 at senior level, before employment costs, equipment, software and the management time a single developer needs. One developer also means one set of skills: you will still buy design, and sometimes specialist app or integration work, from outside.
Offshore teams
Offshore rates are a real part of this market. On the first page of Clutch's Shopify listings, several India-based firms list rates under USD 25 an hour, and in our Partner Directory sample the median starting price for a store build from partners in India and other lower-cost countries was USD 500, against USD 1,500 in the US, UK and Canada. What changes with the rate is timezone overlap, how much direction the team needs, and who is accountable when something breaks at 2am your time. Price the whole project, not the hour.

What Shopify development costs by project
Hourly rates are hard to budget with, because you do not know the hours. Project prices are easier. Here is every rung of our own price ladder, with what each one usually includes. All prices are USD, fixed and quoted before work starts.
| Project type | Tripster Developers (USD) | What it usually covers |
|---|---|---|
| Small fixes | From 49 | A broken section, a layout bug on mobile, an app conflict, a small change to a template |
| Theme customisation | 99 to 1,000 | Brand styling, new sections, template changes on an existing theme |
| Starter store on a theme | 899 to 3,500 | A new store on a well-chosen theme with custom branding, set-up and essential conversion work |
| Custom theme or growth build | 3,500 to 12,000 | A bespoke theme and UX, deeper SEO, custom logic and performance engineering |
| Store migration | 949 to 5,000 | Products, customers and orders moved from another platform, redirects and launch |
| Custom apps, integrations and Odoo | 1,800 to 50,000 | Private or public apps, Shopify Functions, ERP and third-party connections |
| Wholesale and B2B | 2,500 to 14,000 | Trade accounts, price lists, purchase-order checkout, trade storefronts |
| Enterprise and Shopify Plus | From 15,000 | Plus builds, ERP integration, headless storefronts, B2B portals, Magento and Plus migrations |
| Support retainer | From 450 a month | A monthly pool of hours for fixes, updates and ongoing improvements |
Each rung sits just under the Partner Directory medians above, on purpose. We want an independent store and an enterprise Shopify Plus brand to both be able to read our pricing and see where they fit. Our Shopify work runs from small stores to Plus trade portals such as DutchRusk's Shopify Plus B2B storefront, and the same ladder covers all of it.
Small fixes and theme customisation
The most common first job. Budget from about USD 50 for a single fix and USD 100 to 1,000 for theme customisation, depending on how many templates change. Ask for a fixed price per task; if the developer cannot say what the fix is before starting, pay for a short diagnosis first. Our Shopify theme development page covers what theme work includes.
A new store: theme or custom
Most new stores should start on a good purchased theme, customised properly. That is the USD 899 to 3,500 rung. A fully custom theme (USD 3,500 to 12,000) earns its cost when your products, merchandising or brand genuinely do not fit an existing layout. We wrote up the trade-off in custom vs premium Shopify themes. Remember the theme licence itself is a separate cost if you buy one from the Shopify Theme Store.
Migrations
A migration from WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Wix or similar is usually USD 949 to 5,000, driven by catalogue complexity, data quality and the number of redirects rather than the number of pages. Magento, Salesforce and Shopify Plus migrations that rebuild ERP integrations start at USD 15,000. Our Shopify Plus migration guide breaks down the timeline and checklist, and our Shopify migration service covers the rest.
Custom apps and integrations
The widest range on the ladder, USD 1,800 to 50,000, because "an app" can mean a small private tool or a full two-way ERP sync with error recovery and monitoring. Our detailed breakdown is in what a custom Shopify app really costs, and the service itself is Shopify app development.
Shopify Plus and enterprise
Enterprise work starts at USD 15,000 and scales with integrations, stores and B2B complexity. Separately, Shopify charges for the Plus plan itself: USD 2,300 a month on a three-year term or USD 2,500 on a one-year term, according to Shopify's Plus pricing page (checked 30 September 2026). Our Shopify Plus development team handles checkout extensions, Shopify Functions, B2B and integrations.
What drives the cost of a Shopify developer
- Scope clarity. The single biggest factor you control. A vague brief gets a padded quote because the developer is pricing the unknown. A clear list of pages, features and integrations gets a sharp one.
- Custom versus configured. Configuring an app or a theme setting is cheap; building the same thing from scratch is not. Always ask whether an existing app does the job first.
- Integrations. Every connection to an ERP, warehouse, marketplace or accounting system adds testing and failure handling, and is usually the most expensive line in a build.
- Data. Clean product data is cheap to move. Messy variants, missing SKUs and inconsistent attributes take real hours to fix.
- Checkout and discounts. Custom checkout logic now runs on Shopify Functions and checkout UI extensions, which is specialist work.
- Location and seniority. As the tables above show, the same hour costs five to ten times more in some markets than others.
- What is included. Design, QA on real devices, project management, launch support and a warranty period are either in the price or they are extra. Check which.
How to avoid overpaying for Shopify development
- Write a one-page brief. What you sell, your platform today, the pages and features you need, the apps you use, your deadline and your budget. A budget is not a weakness in negotiation; it lets a good developer tell you what fits.
- Ask for a fixed price with milestones. Hourly billing moves the risk of a bad estimate onto you. A fixed price keeps it with the developer.
- Get change requests in writing. Nothing should be added to an invoice that you did not approve first.
- Check what the code belongs to. You should own the theme and custom app code outright, with no licence fee or lock-in.
- Look at real, live stores. Open the stores in a developer's portfolio on your phone and try to buy something. It tells you more than any case study. Here are ours.
- Compare the whole cost, not the rate. Include monthly app fees, the theme licence, Shopify's subscription and support after launch.
- Avoid the two classic traps: the very cheap quote that rebuilds what an app already does, and the very expensive quote for work Shopify now does natively.

Questions to ask before you hire a Shopify developer
- Is this a fixed price, and what exactly is included and excluded?
- Who will actually do the work, and who tests it?
- Which of my requirements can be met with an existing app instead of custom code?
- How do you handle SEO and redirects if URLs change?
- What happens after launch: is there a warranty period, and what does support cost?
- Can I see two live stores you built that are similar to mine?
Tripster Developers has been a Shopify Partner since 2016, working with more than 4,000 merchants, from independent stores to enterprise Shopify Plus brands, with teams in New Zealand, Australia and the USA. Every quote we send is fixed-price, broken into milestones, and free. Tell us what you need and we will come back with a number, or see the whole ladder on our pricing page and our Shopify development services.
Shopify developer cost FAQ
How much does a Shopify developer cost per hour?
On Upwork, Shopify developers charge a median of USD 15 to 29 an hour, from about USD 15 for beginners to USD 95 for experts (Upwork, checked 30 September 2026). Agencies on Clutch list from under USD 25 an hour in India to USD 100 to 199 an hour for many US and UK Shopify agencies. Senior specialists and Shopify Plus agencies sit at the top of that range.
How much does it cost to build a Shopify website?
A store built on a purchased theme with custom branding typically costs USD 899 to 3,500 with Tripster Developers, and a fully custom theme USD 3,500 to 12,000. Enterprise and Shopify Plus builds with ERP integration, B2B or headless storefronts start at USD 15,000. Across the Shopify Partner Directory, the median starting price for a store build is USD 945.
Is it cheaper to hire a Shopify freelancer or an agency?
A freelancer usually has the lower hourly rate, and for a single well-defined task that is often the right choice. An agency costs more per hour but brings design, development, QA and project management together, and is usually cheaper overall for a full build, a migration or an integration, where the expensive part is coordination and getting it right the first time.
How much does a Shopify developer charge for small fixes?
Small fixes such as a broken section, a layout bug or an app conflict usually cost from about USD 50. The median starting price for troubleshooting on the Shopify Partner Directory is USD 50, and Tripster Developers starts small fixes at USD 49, quoted at a fixed price before work begins.
How much does it cost to hire a Shopify developer full time?
In the United States, Lemon.io puts mid-level Shopify developers at about USD 84,000 to 102,000 a year and seniors at about USD 114,000 to 148,000 (report updated September 2026). Add employment costs, equipment and management time. A full-time hire makes sense when you have a steady stream of development work, not for a single project.
Why do Shopify developers charge such different prices?
Location, experience and what is included. An hourly rate from a marketplace freelancer usually covers development only, while an agency price includes design, testing, project management and support after launch. Scope clarity matters just as much: vague briefs get padded quotes, and clear briefs get sharp ones.
