This guide gives you real price ranges for every type of Shopify development work, what drives the cost up or down, and what questions to ask any NZ agency before you sign anything.

Shopify Theme Development Cost in NZ

Theme work falls into two categories: customizing an existing premium theme, or building a custom theme from scratch.

Premium theme customization: USD 99 to 1,000, or USD 899 to 3,500 for a full starter store

You buy a theme from the Shopify Theme Store (paid themes are listed at USD 100 to 500, most of them USD 280 to 420, on the Shopify Theme Store, checked 30 September 2026) and a developer customizes it to match your brand: colors, fonts, layout adjustments, section reordering, and integration with your apps. Changes to a theme you already run sit in the lower range; setting up a new store end to end on a premium theme is the starter-store range. This is the fastest path to a professional Shopify store. Good for merchants who need a quality result quickly without a unique design requirement.

Custom theme from scratch: USD 3,500 to 12,000

A Liquid theme built entirely to your design specifications. Includes section schema architecture (so your team can edit content without a developer), Core Web Vitals optimization, mobile-first responsive build, metafield integration for complex product data, and app block support for OS 2.0. Shopify Markets and multi-language support add cost. This is the right investment when your brand experience cannot be achieved with a modified theme.

Shopify Migration Cost in NZ

Shopify migration cost depends on where you are coming from and what you are bringing across.

WooCommerce to Shopify (data + redirects only): USD 949 to 5,000

Products, customers, orders, and blog posts migrated. All existing URLs mapped to Shopify equivalents with 301 redirects. Meta titles and descriptions preserved. New Shopify store configured on your existing or a new theme. Your WooCommerce store stays live until launch day.

WooCommerce to Shopify (including new theme build): USD 949 to 5,000 plus the theme work

Everything above plus a custom or customized theme built to your new design: USD 899 to 3,500 on a premium theme, or USD 3,500 to 12,000 for a fully custom one. Most NZ merchants migrating from WooCommerce take this option as their WooCommerce theme is often incompatible or outdated.

Magento to Shopify or Shopify Plus: from USD 15,000

Magento stores are structurally more complex: attribute sets, customer group pricing, multi-store configurations, and custom extensions all require planning and rebuild time. Complex catalog structures, B2B pricing logic, and ERP connections add cost.

BigCommerce to Shopify: USD 949 to 5,000

Structurally similar to WooCommerce migrations. BigCommerce URL structures differ from Shopify, so redirect mapping is critical for SEO preservation.

Custom Shopify App Development Cost in NZ

Custom apps are the highest-investment category and also typically deliver the highest ROI when scoped correctly. Our custom app, integration and Odoo work is USD 1,800 to 50,000, fixed-price for the agreed scope and quoted in NZD on request. Where a project lands in that range depends on which of these it is.

Simple embedded admin app: from USD 1,800

A standalone admin panel that connects to Shopify data via the Admin API. Useful for custom dashboards, reporting tools, or internal tools your team uses that do not exist as off-the-shelf apps.

App with Checkout Extensions or Shopify Functions: priced within USD 1,800 to 50,000 on scope

Checkout Extensions add UI elements to the Shopify checkout (delivery date pickers, warranty upsells, B2B order notes). Shopify Functions customize checkout logic (tiered discounts, shipping filtering, custom payment methods). Both require Shopify Partners certification and go through Shopify's review process.

Integration app (Shopify + ERP/third-party): USD 1,800 to 50,000, enterprise ERP from USD 15,000

Real-time sync between Shopify and systems like Odoo, MYOB, Xero, SAP, or NetSuite. Includes webhook handling, error recovery, data transformation logic, and monitoring. Our Odoo integration service is the most common example: two-way sync of products, inventory, orders, and customers between Shopify and Odoo ERP.

Shopify Developer Hourly Rates in NZ

We do not bill project work by the hour. Every Tripster Developers project is quoted at a fixed price for an agreed scope, which is why the numbers above are project prices rather than an hourly rate card.

What the New Zealand market publishes: the Shopify Partner Directory's New Zealand listing (checked 30 September 2026) shows 50 Shopify Partners based in New Zealand. 13 of the 49 other than us publish a price, in USD: their starting prices run from USD 50 to USD 5,000, with a median of USD 500, and the highest published figure is USD 13,000. Fixed-price projects are almost always preferable to time-and-materials for clearly scoped work. A well-scoped Shopify build should have a fixed price for the agreed scope with a clear change order process for anything outside it.

Ongoing Monthly Costs After Launch

Beyond the build cost, plan for:

• Shopify subscription: USD 39 to 399 a month paid monthly, or USD 29 to 299 a month paid yearly, from Basic to Advanced (Shopify New Zealand pricing, checked 30 September 2026)
• Shopify apps: many have free plans; paid plans are billed monthly, usually in USD, so the total depends on which apps you use
• Developer retainer (optional): from USD 450 a month with Tripster Developers for ongoing feature work and support
• Shopify Plus: from USD 2,300 a month (same Shopify pricing page) for enterprise features, only relevant for high-volume merchants
