Shopify pricing: common questions
How much does a Shopify store cost to build?
A theme customization is typically NZD 6,000 to 12,000, a fully custom theme 12,000 to 30,000, and a migration 18,000 to 70,000 depending on catalog size and integrations. Every project is quoted fixed-price before work starts.
Why fixed-price instead of hourly?
Hourly billing pushes the risk of a bad estimate onto you. Fixed-price keeps it with us, which is where it belongs, and it means the number you agree is the number you pay regardless of how long the work actually takes.
What is included in the quote?
Discovery, design, build, testing, launch and post-launch handover. Third-party costs such as Shopify subscription, paid apps and premium themes are listed separately so you can see what is ours and what is not.
Are there ongoing fees after launch?
Not to us, unless you want support. There is no license fee for the code we build and no lock-in. Shopify's own subscription and any paid apps continue as normal.
Do you require a deposit?
Yes, typically a third to start, a third at an agreed milestone and the balance at launch. The schedule is set out in the quote before anything begins.
What if the scope changes mid-project?
We price the change separately and you approve it before we build it. Nothing gets added to your invoice that you did not agree to in writing first.
Do you offer payment plans?
For larger projects we can spread payments across milestones. Tell us what works and we will structure the schedule around it rather than forcing a standard one.
How much does a Shopify migration cost?
Usually NZD 18,000 to 70,000. The range is wide because migration cost is driven almost entirely by catalog complexity, data quality and how many integrations need rebuilding, not by the number of pages.
Is a custom theme worth it over a purchased one?
Often not, and we will say so. A well-built purchased theme customized properly is the right answer for many merchants. A custom theme earns its cost when your merchandising or product structure genuinely does not fit an off-the-shelf layout.
Do you charge for the initial consultation?
No. Tell us what you sell, what platform you are on and what is not working, and we come back with a fixed-price quote and milestone plan at no cost and no obligation.
Do you work with smaller budgets?
Yes, for appropriately scoped work. What we will not do is accept a budget that cannot deliver the scope being asked for, because that ends badly for both of us. We will tell you up front if the numbers do not work.
How do your prices compare to offshore agencies?
Offshore is cheaper per hour and frequently more expensive per project once rework, timezone lag and account-management overhead are counted. We are not the cheapest quote you will get and we do not try to be.
What does Shopify Plus cost and do we need it?
Shopify Plus starts around USD 2,300 per month. Most merchants do not need it. It earns its cost for checkout customization, Shopify Functions, very high volume or multi-store setups, and we will tell you when it is not justified.
Do you quote in NZD, AUD or USD?
Whichever suits you. We quote New Zealand clients in NZD, Australian clients in AUD, and international clients in USD or their local currency where practical.
What happens if the project runs over?
On a fixed-price project, that is our problem and our cost, not yours. That is the point of quoting fixed rather than hourly.
Can we start small and expand later?
Yes, and it is often the smarter route. Launch a solid core store, get real customer data, then invest in the parts the data says matter rather than guessing up front.
Do you charge for support after launch?
Only if you want it. Support is an optional retainer, never a requirement. You can take the store and run it entirely yourself.
How do we get a quote?
Tell us what you sell, your current platform, roughly your catalog size and what is not working today. We come back with a fixed-price quote and a dated milestone plan.
Need a specific quote?
Fill in our project inquiry form and we will provide a detailed, itemized proposal within 24 hours.
